DLNR NEWS RELEASE: DLNR Kaua`i Island community “Talk Story” events planned

Posted on Apr 4, 2017 in Latest Department News

LIHUE — The Department of Land and Natural Resources will be holding a summer series of community “talk story” outreach events on Kaua`i to help local residents and visitors learn about, and understand the Garden Island’s natural and cultural resources, cultural protocol, and regulatory aspects.

The DLNR Community “Talk Story” Outreach Hui will offer fun activities, crafts and educational booths at local parks two Saturdays each month, starting in April.

Events will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on:

April 8 – Salt Pond County Beach Park

April 22 –Po‘ipu County Beach Park

May 6 – Lydgate County Beach Park and Wailua River State Park (Hikina a ka lā area)

May 20 – Black Pot County Beach Park, Hanalei

June 3 – Hā‘ena County Beach Park

July 1 – Polihale State Park

Victoria Wichman, interpretive specialist and archaeologist for the Division of State Parks Kaua`i interpretive program, says “We are finding that people want to learn about our island and how to care for it properly. From gaining educational awareness, many people then volunteer to protect our natural and cultural resources, thereby contributing to our community’s sense of place.”

Staff will be represented from DLNR’s aquatics, boating, forestry and wildlife, state parks, conservation enforcement divisions, and natural area reserves and Na Ala Hele Trails and Access programs. Kaua`i County Department of Parks and Recreation will also participate.
