HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) arranged for the safe tow of the 77-foot fishing vessel, Judy K, from Pier 16 in Honolulu Harbor to Honolulu Marine Shipyard in Kewalo Basin on Monday. It was removed from the water and placed in dry dock today. Due to structural damage the vessel will be scrapped and metal parts will be recycled. The cost of the disposal is $52,000.

The HDOT expresses its sincere gratitude to U.S. Army divers from the 7th Engineer Dive Detachment of the 130th Engineer Brigade, 8th Theater Sustainment Command, who worked tirelessly to refloat the vessel this past week. The vessel had sunk earlier this year.

“The salvage effort was a mutual benefit for Army divers who were able to hone their training and skills, and for the State which was able to put the pier back into full use,” said Darrell Young, HDOT Harbors Division Deputy Director. “The partnership helped save more than $100,000 that can now be used toward other worthwhile improvements to the Port Hawaii system.”
