PSD NEWS RELEASE: Bedbug fumigation begins at OCCC’s Module 20
Posted on Nov 6, 2015 in Latest Department News, Newsroom, Office of the Governor Press ReleasesHONOLULU — The Department of Public Safety is tenting Module 20 at the Oahu Community Correctional Center in an effort to prevent a bedbug infestation.
Module 20 houses up to 120 work furlough inmates when at capacity. These inmates leave for work and return every day to Module 20. It’s not uncommon for bedbugs to be brought back into the facility.
The tenting began yesterday and will remain until Saturday. Inmates are temporarily relocated to the Laumaka Work Furlough Center. They will return to Module 20 on Saturday night.
“The health and well-being of our staff as well as the inmates is our top priority,” said PSD Director Nolan Espinda. “Instead of waiting to see if spot treatment is working, our Warden took preventative measures and ordered tenting to be done to keep the situation from turning into an infestation.”
Other preventative steps that have been taken in the past include using sprays, and replacing mattresses and bedding. Sanitation protocols and hygiene maintenance are enforced as well.
