DLNR NEWS RELEASE: DLNR Holds Public Meeting February 5 on Koke‘e Animal Control within Pu‘u Ka Pele Fire Reforestation Project
Posted on Jan 29, 2016 in Latest Department News, Newsroom, Office of the Governor Press ReleasesLIHU‘E, KAUA‘I — The latest step in the state’s ongoing efforts to restore the Pu‘u Ka Pele Forest Reserve on Kaua‘i is to protect the newly out-planted koa trees within the previously burned and logged area, by carrying out an animal control hunt within a designated portion of the forest reserve. This animal control will run for two months from Feb. 8, 2016 to April 8, 2016.
For more information and to sign up to participate in this control hunt all members from each hunting group will need to be present and sign up at a public meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, at the State Office Building, 3060 ‘Eiwa Street Room 209, in Lihu‘e.
IMPORTANT: Be on time. Due to state facility rules the main front doors of the Office Building will be closed and locked once the meeting starts.
The designated areas for this control hunt will be Polihale Ridge (Trail 4) and Hikimoe Ridge.
This will be a night animal control hunt. Hunting times will be from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. weekdays and non-holidays only.
There are a total of 43 hunting nights available. One group per night will be assigned. Each group may have 2-4 people with one vehicle.
Hunting methods permitted are legal rifle and/or shotgun still hunt with artificial/spotlight. All game species within the project area are open.
Hunting nights will be designated through a lottery system to the first 43 groups drawn.
All interested hunters will need to provide a valid form of identification, valid Hawai‘i Hunting license and license plate number of vehicle that will be used.
