ATG NEWS RELEASE: Honolulu Police complete inventory of untested sexual assault kits

HONOLULU –Attorney General Doug Chin announced today that the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) completed its inventory of untested sexual assault evidence collection kits in HPD’s possession.
Act 207 (H.B. 1907), passed this year by the state legislature and signed into law by Governor David Ige, requires all law enforcement agencies and departments charged with the maintenance, storage and preservation of sexual assault evidence collection kits to conduct an inventory of all such kits being stored by the agency or department. Last Thursday, Maui, Hawaii and Kauai counties reported their inventory results to the State.
The Honolulu Police Department (HPD) report is attached to this news release and reflects the following:
Total No. of Kits = 1,512
Total No. Kits Tested = 137
Total No. of Untested Kits = 1,375
HPD began using sexual evidence collection kits in 1993. HPD’s inventory extends through the period ending June 30, 2016. A final report from the attorney general regarding statewide efforts is due to the state legislature by December 1, 2016.
