UH prepares for fall return

Students at the 10 UH system campuses can expect a “COVID-19-aware approach” for the fall 2020 semester.
The 10 campuses of the University of Hawaiʻi system will be using both on-campus and online instruction for the fall 2020 semester starting Aug. 24, in what is being called a “COVID-19-aware approach” to keep students, faculty and staff safe, said UH President David Lassner. This includes steps to ensure social distancing and hygiene.
“We all realize that the fall will absolutely not be a return to business as usual,” said Lassner. “There is still great uncertainty, but plans for the state are taking shape. UH is offering a safe, affordable opportunity for higher education on all islands.” The new deadline for students to apply is Aug. 1. “We’ve been getting a lot of interest from families who were thinking of sending their kids to the mainland,” UH spokesman Dan Meisenzahl added.
In other news, SAT and ACT scores will be optional for students applying to enter the University of Hawaiʻi as freshmen in the fall 2021 semester. The College Board canceled SAT exams that were scheduled for May and June, when many high school juniors normally take the test. Applicants to UH Mānoa may still submit standardized test scores if they want. The exemption applies only to undergraduates applying for the 2021-22 academic year. There are no changes at UH-Hilo and UH West Oʻahu, where standardized tests are not used as principal criteria in the application process. College admissions tests are not required for admission to the UH community colleges.
