Posted on Apr 17, 2015 in Latest Department News, Main, Newsroom, Office of the Governor Press ReleasesHONOLULU – The Department of Public Safety (PSD) today welcomed a new class of adult correctional officers at a graduation ceremony and luncheon held at the Pagoda Restaurant in Honolulu. 23 recruits graduated from Basic Corrections Training (BCT).
BCT is an 8 week training that includes 440 hours of classroom time and physical training. Recruits learn standard of conduct, professionalism and ethics, report writing, interpersonal communications, maintaining security, crisis intervention, security threat groups, firearms, self-defense tactics, and physical exercise.
““We have updated and modified our training curriculum to provide the most current and proven best practices used in correctional facilities around the country,” says Lieutenant Rebecca Penitani, BCT Officer in Charge. “This isn’t an easy job—one not only has to be a peacekeeper in the prisons and jails, but a counselor, mediator, role model, and above all else, a professional. I couldn’t be more proud of this group.”
All incoming classes receive Recruit Field Training along with Basic Corrections Training. That means, during the final weeks of training, they go into the facility and begin their job with the guidance of their training sergeants.
The 23 graduates have been assigned to the following correctional centers/facilities statewide:
Waiawa Correctional Facility- 7
Women’s Community Correctional Center- 5
Kulani Correctional Facility- 2
Hawaii Community Correctional Center- 5
Maui Community Correctional Center- 2
