HONOLULU – Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Director Catherine Awakuni Colόn was recently selected as an Omidyar Fellow. The Omidyar Fellows program is an intensive, 15-month program originated by Pierre Omidyar and based on global best practices in leadership development.

“I am excited that Cat has been selected for this experience,” said Gov. David Ige. “Her selection is reflective of her achievements and commitment to public service. The skills and relationships she builds in the fellows program will be a great asset to the state.”

Awakuni Colόn was appointed as the Director of the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA), effective January 2015. She previously served as the cable administrator for DCCA’s Cable Television Division, the state Consumer Advocate, and was chief legal counsel for the Hawai‘i Public Utilities Commission.  “It’s an honor to be named along with such an amazing group of leaders,” said Awakuni Colón. “I look forward to learning with and from them and to participating in this remarkable program.”

Omidyar Fellows include local leaders from a wide range of sectors, including nonprofit, government and business. Director Awakuni Colόn will be one of 15 cohorts for 2015-2016. As the cohorts complete the 15-month program, they come together in the Forum of Fellows, which encourages them to remain connected as they engage in their respective roles in the community. Cohorts are expected to participate in one full-day session each month, receive executive coaching, and network with community, business, and government leaders.
