DHHL NEWS RELEASE: Unauthorized Campers Removed, Fence Being Installed in Kalawahine

Posted on Feb 4, 2021 in Latest Department News, Newsroom

(Kalawahine, Oʻahu) – The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) has completed the removal of unauthorized campers and is in the process of installing a fence in the Kalawahine Subdivision of Honolulu, Oʻahu.

The Department of Public Safety Sheriff Division, State of Hawaii Department of Transportation, Governor’s Task Force on Homelessness, and Kula No Na Poʻe Hawaiʻi partnered in the effort.

DHHL staff posted notifications ahead of the removal along Kapahu Street.

Four people were identified and issued trespass warnings and notice to remove objects. By the start of the fencing project, three individuals were removed, including one person who accepted shelter services.

The 6-foot-tall, approximately 200-foot long fence will secure unencumbered land that borders the subdivision.

“We are thankful for the community’s cooperation in this effort,” said Hawaiian Homes Commission Chairman William J. Ailā, Jr. “The Department heard concerns about unauthorized campers in this area and worked with the homestead community association to provide time to guide these individuals to available resources. This fence will secure undevelopable lands and provide the community with a sense of safety.”

DHHL installed a fence along Prospect Street in Honolulu, Oʻahu in November 2020 and is completing several additional fencing projects to secure unencumbered lands statewide.
