DLNR NEWS RELEASE: PROJECT UPDATE: DLNR TO CLOSE THE SUMMIT LOOKOUT AREA FOR CONTINUED REPAIRS & IMPROVEMENTS TO THE MAKAPU‘U POINT LIGHTHOUSE TRAIL (ROAD)
Posted on Jun 15, 2015 in Latest Department News, Newsroom, Office of the Governor Press ReleasesHONOLULU – The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Division of State Parks will close the upper Makapu’u lookout and adjacent areas starting June 17, 2015. The lower lookout facing Makapu`u will be kept open for park visitors. The upper lookout will be replaced in the same location and work in the adjacent areas includes new pathways, stairs, guardrails and other related improvements.
The Makapu`u Point Lightouse Trail (Road), located within Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline, will remain open but construction activities will occur in areas traversed by park users. DLNR advises caution to allow project staff, equipment and vehicles to work in these areas. “We want to acknowledge everyone’s understanding and patience as delays and inconveniences have been experienced throughout this project” said Dan Quinn, State Parks Administrator. “We appreciate your continued support in our efforts to ensure the balance of safety and project completion” he added.
New drainage lines have been installed and the construction of rock walls to stabilize the roadway is continuing. Work on the new bench rest areas and lookouts is underway. As a reminder, there will be full closure of the trail in late July during weekdays, but the trail will be opened on the weekends. The work will not affect the Makapu‘u lookout along Kalaniana‘ole Highway and the shoreline will remain open.
