News release from DLNR – START OF WORK ON LANIKAI PILLBOX STRUCTURES TEMPORARILY DELAYED

Posted on Mar 29, 2018 in Office of the Governor Press Releases

HONOLULU —   Closure of the popular Ka’iwa Ridge hiking trail, also known as the Lanikai “pillbox” trail, has been postponed until further notice. Work to repair the pillbox structures was originally set to begin on March 28.  The trail remains open at this time. DLNR reminds trail users that there will be limited parking in the Lanikai area due to the three-day holiday weekend. A City news release was issued as a reminder of parking restrictions and enforcement.

DLNR’s Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) will issue a future closure announcement when a new construction start date is determined.  The contractor has been working with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on a flight plan to airlift equipment and materials to the project site.  However, due to unforeseen logistical issues within the FAA, the company was informed that there will be delays in processing and approving this flight plan.  The contractor hopes to obtain FAA approval for the helicopter airlift within the next few weeks.
