HDOT NEWS RELEASE: Truck escape ramp opens on Daniel K. Inouye Highway in Kona
Posted on Sep 8, 2015 in Latest Department News, Newsroom, Office of the Governor Press ReleasesKONA – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) advises motorists that as of Friday, Sept. 4, the truck escape ramp and drainage improvements of the Daniel K. Inouye Truck Escape Ramp project have been completed. The 1,600-foot-long escape ramp is fully functional and open to the public. It is located on Daniel K. Inouye Highway (Route 200) at milepoint 49.0 to 49.3 for traffic heading westbound. The completed drainage improvements are located at milepoint 43 and 44.
The $3.8 million project that was started in April of 2015 will improve safety along this stretch of highway by providing an escape route for trucks needing to exit the roadway. Other project improvements include safety upgrades at the Daniel K. Inouye Highway and Mamalahoa Highway (Route 190) Intersection which consist of updated highway lighting, rumble strip, and signage installations. The intersection improvements are expected to be completed by December of 2015, weather permitting.
