HI-EMA NEWS RELEASE: Cause of Waimanalo warning siren activation identified

HONOLULU — Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (HI-EMA), formerly State Civil Defense, received reports of a siren sounding in Waimanalo at approximately 12:40 a.m. today.

A newly installed siren at Kaiona Beach Park in Waimanalo sounded when someone opened the control panel mounted on the siren pole. The cabinet has a security alarm and it went off immediately when its door opened. The City & County of Honolulu’s Department of Emergency Management staff muted the siren and re-secured the cabinet. The siren is now operational.

There is no emergency associated with the outdoor warning sirens at this time, and the public should be aware that emergency siren activation would not happen without an accompanying Emergency Alert System message.
