ATG NEWS RELEASE: Attorney General Doug Chin’s statement regarding today’s ruling in City of Chicago V. Sessions

Posted on Sep 15, 2017 in Latest Department News

HONOLULU – Attorney General Doug Chin issued the following statement in response to an Illinois federal judge ruling today that the Trump administration may not condition certain federal grants upon compliance with federal immigration rules. Earlier this year, state and county law enforcement were told that they would have to provide federal immigration officials access to prisons and jails and 48 hours notice prior to release of individuals of interest or else lose eligibility for federal funds.

“Today’s nationwide order from a federal judge shows how courts continue to block the Trump administration from illegal and unconstitutional actions. It is a win for sanctuary jurisdictions and others that don’t want to be used by the federal government as a tool for immigration enforcement.”

A copy of today’s order in The City of Chicago v. Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III, N.D. Illinois, is attached.
