ATG NEWS RELEASE: Former Halawa inmate indicted for assult
Posted on Nov 1, 2016 in Latest Department NewsHONOLULU – Attorney General Doug Chin announced that an Oahu grand jury last Thursday, October 27, 2016, indicted former Halawa prison inmate Julius Mitchell for assault in the first degree. The alleged assault occurred while Mitchell was an inmate at Halawa.
The indictment alleges Mitchell intentionally or knowingly caused serious bodily injury to Kevin Nakayama in violation of section 707-710 of the Hawaii Revised Statutes. Nakayama was also an inmate at the Halawa facility at the time of the alleged assault.
Assault in the first degree is a class B felony punishable by up to ten years in prison and a $25,000 fine.
The court set bail in the amount of $25,000. A grand jury bench warrant has been issued for Mitchell’s arrest.
Mitchell is presumed innocent unless and until he is found guilty of the charges beyond a reasonable doubt.
