HONOLULU – A Kauai grand jury indicted Kanbert Alapai last week for Methamphetamine Trafficking in the First Degree and several other related criminal offenses, Attorney General Doug Chin announced.
Alapai was found with more than 100 grams of methamphetamine, more than 120 grams of marijuana, and paraphernalia including three glass pipes with residue, a lighter torch, rolling paper, two scales, over twenty ziplock baggies, many containing white crystalline substances, and $3,308.00 in small bills. He also was illegally in possession of a butterfly knife. Alapai is thirty-five years old and has previous convictions for felony forgery and criminal contempt of court.
Attorney General Chin said “The scourge of ‘ice’ remains a serious problem throughout the state and we must continue to vigorously prosecute those who traffic in it.”
Under current Hawaii law, Methamphetamine Trafficking in the First Degree (Hawaii Revised Statutes section 712-1240.7) is a class A felony punishable by up to twenty years in prison, with a mandatory minimum prison term of two to eight years with no probation.
Alapai is presumed innocent unless and until he is found guilty of the charges beyond a reasonable doubt.
