ATG NEWS RELEASE: National Association of Attorneys General recognizes Hawaii Deputy Attorney General Hugh Jones

HONOLULU – The National Association of Attorneys General (“NAAG”) has awarded Supervising Deputy Attorney General Hugh Jones its Senior Staff of the Year Award, Attorney General Doug Chin announced. The award was presented to Mr. Jones during NAAG’s summer meeting in Burlington, Vermont today. Mr. Jones shares this year’s award with Jeff Milsteen, Chief Deputy Attorney General in Georgia.
The Attorney General Senior Staff of the Year Award is presented to a member of an attorney general’s management staff who has distinguished himself nationwide by showing exemplary expertise and achievement.
Mr. Jones is currently the Supervising Deputy Attorney General overseeing the Tax and Charities Division of the Hawaii Department of the Attorney General. He has worked for the Department for almost twenty-seven years under seven attorneys general during his thirty years of legal practice. In addition to his duties at the Department, he has provided significant service to NAAG and its affiliated organization, the National Association of State Charity Officials (“NASCO”). Mr. Jones served as a director of NASCO for several years and was its president in 2009.
Attorney General Chin said “Hugh received this office’s Outstanding Performance Award four times and was named its Manager of the Year in 2009. He also received the Hawaii State Bar Association’s President’s Award for Lifetime Service to the Bar in 2009, and was the first government attorney to be elected as President of the Hawaii State Bar Association in 2010. We are very proud that he has been recognized nationally by NAAG for his service.”
During his tenure with the Tax & Charities Division, Mr. Jones drafted and enacted at least five pieces of legislation to improve the state’s regulation of charitable organizations and their professional fundraisers. Under his leadership the Department’s regulation of charities and their fundraisers has become paperless. It is now Internet-based and all registration and financial reporting data is publicly accessible on the Internet.
In addition to his work for the Department and for NAAG, Mr. Jones has been a visiting professor of law at the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawaii since 2010. He is also a frequent speaker at Hawaii conferences and seminars devoted to nonprofit regulation and governance.
