DCCA NEWS RELEASE: Hawaii Securities Commissioner introduces Senior$afe training program to fight senior financial abuse

HONOLULU – The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs’ (DCCA) Office of the Securities Commissioner joins the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) in bringing the Senior$afe Training Program to Hawaii.
Senior$afe is designed to train securities industry professionals in identifying red flags of financial exploitation of seniors and vulnerable investors early and encourage reporting to state and federal agencies including the Office of the Securities Commissioner and Adult Protective Services.
The DCCA Office of the Securities Commissioner along with its partners, the Department of Human Services, Adult Protective & Community Services Branch, and the Department of Attorney General Crime Prevention and Justice Assistance Division will host a half-day “Hawaii Senior$afe” Workshop on October 5, 2016. Invited guests include broker-dealers and investment advisers from the securities industry statewide. This will be the first time the Office of the Securities Commissioner hosts a training event for the securities industry.
“The Hawaii Senior$afe Program is a valuable tool in the fight against financial exploitation of our seniors and vulnerable investors,” said Securities Commissioner Ty Nohara. “What makes this program powerful is the collaboration between regulatory agencies, law enforcement and those in the securities industry. The relationship that securities professionals have with their clients may enable them to spot potential problems sooner, helping to ensure that financial fraud is reported timely and handled by the appropriate agency.”
