HONOLULU – A team of students represented Hawaii and competed at the National LifeSmarts Championship held in Denver, Colo. from April 9-12. The team, comprised of students from Iolani School, tied with Tennessee to place third out of a total of 33 teams from across the nation.
The national LifeSmarts program is run by the National Consumers League and locally by the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs’ Office of the Securities Commissioner, in partnership with the Hawaii Credit Union League. The game-show style competition tests students on their knowledge of personal finance, health and safety, the environment, technology, and consumer rights and responsibilities.
“We are very proud of Iolani’s performance at the competition. The students demonstrated their LifeSmarts knowledge and they did an excellent job of representing the State of Hawaii through their sportsmanship,” said Securities Commissioner Ty Nohara.
Team members from Iolani School include: Team Captain Chase Nakamura, Drey Tengan, Landon Sur, Norton Kishi and Sean Callahan, and Coach James Rubasch. As third place winners, they received a team trophy, individual certificates, and $50 Amazon gift cards. Each student also received a $750 post-secondary educational scholarship.
