DLNR MEDIA ADVISORY: Statewide marine debris survey reveals accumulation hot springs

Aerial surveys of the entire coastline of the main eight Hawaiian Islands in late 2015 provides a close-up view of the amount and types of marine debris that regularly accumulates. The study was funded by the Ministry of the Environment of Japan as part of the Japan Tsunami Gift Fund. While the survey found a very limited amount of debris associated with the Japan tsunami, it reveals that most debris landing on Hawaii beaches, is either derelict fishing gear and nets or everyday plastics discarded by people.
