DLNR News Release: AHUPUAʻA ʻO KAHANA STATE PARK WATER QUALITY TESTING PROJECT

Posted on Dec 24, 2019 in Latest Department News

HONOLULU – The DLNR Division of State Parks will implement an extensive environmental water sampling program of the Kahana Stream and adjoining areas within the Ahupuaʻa ʻO Kahana State Park, Oahu. The water quality testing project will span from January to September 2020.

The examination is in response to an Informal Notice of Violation (INOV) issued by the State of Hawai‘i Department of Health in 2013 to correct the violations from “unauthorized and undocumented cesspools” located within the park. The systems servicing the comfort stations at the Kahuna Boat Ramp and Orientation Center will be included in the sampling in order to ensure proper operational capability of all State Parks’ individual wastewater systems.

Staff from Element Environmental, LLC, will be sampling upstream, downstream, stream bank, near shore, and other areas during this period. The results will provide the technical data necessary to investigate appropriate corrective measures to address the INOV and generate pertinent water quality information for the immediate watershed.
