Energy Efficient Facility Provides Space for Four Divisions

(Wailuku) – Today, a blessing and ribbon cutting marked the completion of a new 8,000 square-foot building, housing four divisions of the Department of Land and Natural Resources on Maui.

The event was attended by Governor David Ige, DLNR Chair Suzanne Case, DLNR Chief Engineer Carty Chang, and DLNR Maui Historic Preservation History and Cultural Branch Chief Hinano Rodrigues. Several Maui legislators and Maui DLNR staff also joined in the blessing.

Governor Ige turned over a shovel used in the December 2017 groundbreaking to Chair Case, as a symbol signifying the outstanding hard work of public servants.

“It’s so exiting to be here for the opening of the new building, especially having been able to be here for the groundbreaking,” said Case.  “To see this place become fully alive is just a wonderful opportunity. And we want to thank legislators so much for their supporting the construction of this building. It’s so important for all divisions of DLNR to work together, to meet with each other and meet with constituents and stakeholders in a central location., This beautiful building will enhance the really important work DLNR staff performs for the people of Maui Nui.”

The new DLNR Maui Office Annex building will provide office space for staff from the DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR), State Historic Preservation (SHPD), Land Division and Engineering Divisions with an updated facility that is designed to maximize space within a triangular footprint. Increased ambient lighting and a photovoltaic system will lower operational costs. Chang explained, “When we first took this project on, we wanted to make sure that it serves the needs of the divisions, is energy efficient, and has ample parking for staff and visitors.
