Posted on Apr 15, 2016 in Latest Department News

HONOLULU –- The Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation has commissioned a paving project at Ke‘ehi Small Boat Harbor in Honolulu. The paving will be carried out in three phases.

Now underway is phase one of the paving project, which began Saturday, April 9, 2016. It will encompass the main entry leading to Ke‘ehi small boat harbor from Sand Island Access Road to the harbor roadway just ‘ewa of the Ke‘ehi Harbor Master’s office.

Phase two and three will include paving the roadways from the harbor master’s office to the 900 row of the harbor which is the farthest western extent of the property.

During all three phases of the project, during pavement preparation and paving operations, only one-half of the affected roadways under construction at a time will be blocked off. The contractor will provide traffic control during construction times to ensure uninterrupted user access to the harbor.

“The paving project will enhance use of the harbor, reduce dust from cars traversing the gravel roads and improve the appearance of the facility,” said Ed Underwood, DOBOR administrator.  “It will make visiting the new DOBOR administrative offices more agreeable for boaters and DOBOR clients.”

The new DOBOR Division headquarters based on O‘ahu opened its doors for business on February 16 this year at Ke‘ehi Small Boat Harbor.  Its new physical address is 4 Sand Island Access Road, Honolulu, HI 96819.

The contractor for phase one of the paving project is Maui Kupono Buildings, LLC.  Cost of the contract is $148,548.  Projected completion date for phase one is June 12, 2016.

The Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) administers programs, manages facilities and issues permits to provide access to Hawaii’s ocean resources and make the harbors and near-shore waters safe for all users.  Management jurisdiction includes boat harbors, independent boat ramp facilities, designated offshore mooring areas, landings, wharves, public shorelines and lands adjacent to these DOBOR facilities. The division oversees all “waters of the state” and Ocean Recreation Management Areas (ORMAs) situated offshore of the Main Hawaiian Islands.
