DLNR NEWS RELEASE: Temporary closure of the Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail September 13-15 for improvements to the park entry road and parking lot

Posted on Sep 8, 2017 in Latest Department News

HONOLULU – The popular Makapu‘u Lighthouse trail and parking lot will be closed from Wednesday September 13 through Friday September 15. The closure is necessary while a weather-resistant protective slurry seal coat is applied on the asphalt pavement of the park entry road and parking lot. The sealant requires time to cure and vehicles must stay off the pavement during this time.

A week later, the park will be closed for an additional day when the striping for the parking stalls is applied. The exact date will be posted on the DLNR Division of State Parks website when available: https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/dsp/

“We apologize to hikers for this inconvenience, and have tried to schedule the work to minimize disruption to park use. However, this work will ensure that the pavement in the park remains in good condition for many more years,” said Curt Cottrell, State Parks administrator.

This work will not affect the Makapu‘u Lookout along Kalaniana‘ole Highway. During the closure, the public may access the Kaiwi shoreline from the park boundary adjacent to Sandy Beach.
