HONOLULU — Lanai residents now have a certified redemption center on the island again and can resume recycling their beverage containers and other recyclables. The previous contract with Maui Disposal to operate the redemption center ended December 31, 2015. The Hawaii State Department of Health recently awarded a new contract to Maui Disposal, who was the sole bidder, to provide redemption services beginning on March 1, 2016.

The Lanai Redemption & Recycling Center is located below the Castle & Cooke Administration Building at corner of 12th Street and Fraser Avenue in Lanai City. The hours of operation are Monday and Wednesday, from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Friday, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“We’re glad to be partnering with Maui Disposal to offer this valuable service to the community,” said Keith Kawaoka, deputy director of environmental health with the Hawaii State Department of Health. “This is a win-win for the environment and the people of Lanai.”

In addition to paying handling fees for each container recycled at the center, the Department of Health’s Deposit Beverage Container Program has subsidized the center’s operational expenses up to $100,000 annually since 2008 in order to assure recycling convenience for Lanai residents.

Since the start of operations of certified redemption centers statewide in January 2005, the HI-5 program has assisted residents to recycle more than 7 billion beverage containers. This means that the program has recycled just over 70 percent of the containers that have been sold in Hawaii during that time.
