Dozens of Boats Posted for Removal at Lanikai Beach, June 15, 2018
Posted on Jun 15, 2018 in Latest Department News(Honolulu) – Between 80 and 100 outrigger canoes and catamarans on the beach at Lanikai were posted with notices today. Owners have 72 hours to remove their vessels from unencumbered State lands or face their boats being impounded.
DLNR Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) Administrator Ed Underwood, DOBOR O‘ahu District Manager Meghan Statts and two other DOBOR staff walked from one end of Lanikai Beach and stopped at each boat to photograph it, check its registration and post the 72-hour removal notices. Statts said, “Many of these boats have been illegally stored on the beach for years. Community members and area legislators have made it clear that ‘boat parking’ is taking up significant beach area at Lanikai.”
DOBOR will provide permits for overnight storage of vessels, particularly to canoe clubs that use their boats regularly. Without permits any overnight storage is considered illegal. Currently lined-up vessels stretch hull-to-hull nearly the entire length of Lanikai Beach. People who have boats that were posted should contact the DOBOR O‘ahu District Office at (808) 832-3520 to discuss possible options.
Previously DOBOR has conducted similar operations at nearby Kailua Beach and is expected to do a posting sweep of that area in the coming weeks. Several local residents stopped the DOBOR team today to thank them for giving attention to the issue.
