Posted on Dec 7, 2017 in Latest Department News

HONOLULU – Gov. David Ige has tapped Linda Chu Takayama to serve as interim director of the Department of Taxation (DOTAX) in the wake of the resignation of Maria Zielinski.

Takayama has served as the director of the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations (DLIR) since April 2015. She will assume her new position on Monday, Dec. 11.

“I appreciate the governor’s confidence in giving me this new assignment. I am committed to ensuring that the revenue engine of the state, including the technology needed to support this critical function, works well. That includes working with all parties, especially the staff, to ensure that the taxpayers, both individuals and businesses, are well served,” Takayama said.

Takayama has served as the executive director of the Honolulu Mayor’s Office of Economic Development. She previously served as deputy director of the State Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs and as the Hawai‘i Insurance Commissioner. Takayama received a BA in journalism from the University of Hawai‘i and earned her Juris Doctorate degree from George Mason University School of Law in Virginia.

A search for Takayama’s replacement at DLIR is underway.

DOTAX Deputy Director Damien Elefante will serve as acting director of until Dec. 11.

Takayama’s appointment is subject to Senate confirmation
