HAWAII RECEIVES IN EXCESS OF $84 MILLION FROM TOBACCO COMPANIES

HONOLULU – Attorney General Russell Suzuki today announced that the State of Hawaii has received $84,749,797.79 as part of its arbitration settlement with the Tobacco Industry. The settlement resolves an ongoing dispute between the tobacco companies and Hawaii, relating to compliance with the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) from 2004 – 2017.

The Attorney General reported earlier that the State expected to receive approximately $54 million. This amount only represented what the State negotiated for the funds that were withheld from Hawaii during the disputed years. The current payment of $84,749,797.79 not only includes the approximately $54 million, but also Hawaii’s annual disbursement pursuant to the MSA.
