HDOT News Release: HDOT begins pedestrian bridges replacement project at HNL

Posted on Feb 8, 2019 in Latest Department News

One pedestrian bridge from the parking lot to the terminal will be closed at a time

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) is replacing the three pedestrian bridges that connect the parking garage to the airline ticket lobbies in Terminal 2 at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) beginning Feb. 11, 2019.

Crews will begin working on the Ewa pedestrian bridge which involves the 24/7 closure of the bridge and the elevators on both ends. Pedestrian access to and from the Terminal 2 parking structure and the Terminal 2 lobbies is available at the Central and Diamond Head bridges and the street level crosswalks. Detour signs will be posted to direct people to the alternate routes.

There will be partial lane closures on the first level roadways. Vehicle access on the first level inner and outer roadways around the bridge construction work will be reduced by a lane during the day. At night from 8:30 p.m. until 5 a.m. the outer roadway around the bridge construction work will be reduced by two lanes. The international arrivals on-demand taxi zone will be reduced to accommodate the construction. Rental car and prearranged ground transportation pick-up zones will not be impacted during this phase of the construction.

Travelers who plan to park in the Terminal 2 Parking Structure should allow extra time to walk to the detour route and reach their airline lobby.

The project will replace all three pedestrian bridges and is anticipated to be completed in two years, weather permitting. The general contractor is Nan, Inc. The project cost is $23 million.
