HDOT News Release: Update on Kuhio Highway landslides in North Kauai

Posted on Apr 14, 2018 in Latest Department News

LIHUE – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) provides the following update to Kauai motorists on the closure of Kuhio Highway near Waikoko Beach and Wainiha. The highway in these areas will remain closed throughout the night as the surrounding hillsides remain unstable from heavy rains.

The HDOT crew working to clear the road in Waikoko had to shelter in the area as the landslides were on either side of them. They were able to shelter in a safe location and were able to evacuate at approximately 7 p.m. Saturday, April 14, 2018. A crew will return to the area when conditions stabilize.

Current weather conditions are such that digging into the landslide debris is not safe. When it is safe to continue debris removal operations, HDOT will work with the County of Kauai to provide an update on when the roadway can be reopened.
