HI-EMA NEWS RELEASE: New siren testing on Maui scheduled for May 17-19, 2017

HONOLULU — Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (Hawaii EMA), together with the Maui Emergency Management Agency will conduct siren testing at the following locations and times.

Wednesday, May 17, 2017 (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.)

  • Honokawai Beach Park, Lahaina
  • Napili Park, Lahaina

Thursday, May 18, 2017 (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.)

  • Kilohana Park, Kihei
  • Kamaole Park, Kihei
  • Kalama Park, Kihei
  • Saint Theresa, Kihei
  • Makena Waste Water Treatment Plant, Makena

      Friday, May 19, 2017 (8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.)

  • Makana Park, Paia
  • Kanaha Beach Park, Kahului

These new sirens are part of the Statewide Siren Modernization Project. Residents nearby may hear the siren sound six to eight times for 30-second to one-minute intervals during the identified timeframe. Testing will include short blasts known as “burps.” During the tests, emergency management officials and technicians will check that installation work on these sirens has been completed properly.

Hawaii EMA encourages the public to make use of other supplemental methods of warning including, but not limited to, Maui County’s mass text notification system (Makaala Alerts) and NOAA Weather Radio.
