Honolulu Police Lieutenant Charged with Tax Violations
Posted on Oct 11, 2018 in Latest Department NewsHONOLULU – Eric Yiu, a lieutenant with the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) was arrested today by HPD Professional Standards Detectives for tax violations.
Yiu was charged on October 8, 2018 in Circuit Court with violating six (6) counts of filing false and fraudulent tax returns for tax years 2011-2016. The charges were the result of a joint investigation conducted by the Honolulu Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Hawaii Department of Attorney General, and the Department of Taxation.
Yiu faces imprisonment of not more than three years, or probation and a fine of not more than $100,000 per count if convicted of filing false and fraudulent tax returns in violation of Hawaii Revised Statutes (HRS) Section 231-36.
“The Department will aggressively enforce Hawaii’s tax laws, particularly with those individuals in positions of public trust. Those individuals should be held to a higher standard. This will ensure the integrity of a fair tax system where we all pay our share,” said Linda Chu Takayama, Director for the Department of Taxation.
