Oahu Businessman Arrested for Tax Violations

HONOLULU – Donn Tanaka, President of East West Associates, Inc. was arrested today in Honolulu by Special Agents from the Department of Taxation and Department of Public Safety Deputy Sheriffs for tax violations.

Donn Tanaka and East West Associates, Inc. were both charged on June 26, 2018 in Circuit Court with violating 3 counts of wilful failure to pay over withholding taxes for tax years 2013 – 2015.

Tanaka faces imprisonment of not more than five years, or probation and a fine of not more than $100,000 for each felony count if convicted of wilful failure to collect and pay over tax in violation of Hawaii Revised Statutes Section 231-36.4. East West Associates Inc. faces a fine of not more than $500,000 if convicted.

Under Governor Ige’s administration, there have been increased enforcement efforts by the Criminal Investigation Section of the Department of Taxation and the Department of the Attorney General.
