WHAT: SPECIAL EXHIBITION: Upon the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the
Scioto to Honolulu Harbor, The Hawai‘i State Archives and Japanese
Cultural Center of Hawai‘i present:

“The Gannenmono: Their Journey to Hawai‘i”

A one-day exhibition of historical documents that chronicle the journey of the first organized group of immigrants from Japan to Hawai’i. They’re called the Gannenmono. Primary historical documents from the Archives’ special collection include the written correspondence from Eugene Van Reed, Consul General for Hawai’i to Japan, the Passenger List of the ship, Scioto, the labor contract, and the treaty between the Kingdom of Hawai’i and Japan.
