David Ige leaves for Vail, Colorado on Saturday, June 8, to attend the Western Governors’ Association’s 2019 Annual Meeting from June 9 – 12. The governor, who is the current WGA chairman, will give opening remarks, moderate a roundtable session on biosecurity and invasive species and attend various meetings, discussions and events.
On June 12, Gov. Ige travels from Colorado to Washington, D.C. for Council of Governors meetings. The council consists of ten governors from across the country, appointed by the President. Gov. Ige serves as co-chair with Gov. Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas.
The council was created by the National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2008 and formally established by Executive Order in 2010. The council serves as a mechanism for governors and key federal officials to address matters pertaining to the National Guard, homeland defense and defense support to civil authorities.
While the governor travels, Attorney General Clare Connors will serve as acting governor from June 8 to June 9. Lt. Gov. Josh Green will then serve as acting governor until Gov. Ige’s return to Hawai‘i on June 16.
