OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR — News Release — Governor Ige’s request for reconsideration of individual assistance approved for severe flooding, landslides on Kauai, Oahu

Posted on Jun 27, 2018 in Latest Department News, Office of the Governor Press Releases

HONOLULU – Gov. David Ige announced the president has approved the state’s appeal of a Major Disaster Declaration for individual assistance for damage incurred as a result of severe storms, flooding, landslides and mudslides on Kaua‘i and O‘ahu between April 13 and April 16, 2018.

The approval paves the way for Kaua‘i and O‘ahu residents affected by the storm and floods to apply for individual assistance from federal programs that include Disaster Crisis Counseling, Disaster Unemployment Assistance, and Disaster Case Management in Kaua‘i County and the City and County of Honolulu.

“Emergency workers on Kauaʻi and Oʻahu never gave up and worked tirelessly with community members to ensure that damage from the storms was documented. The FEMA team played a key role in the follow-up Joint Preliminary Damage Assessment, and this approval takes the agency’s response to the next level. I am grateful to those here on the ground, the Region IX administrator and those in Washington, D.C. who have recognized the need for this assistance and approved the state’s appeal,” said Gov. Ige.

Gov. Ige submitted the request for reconsideration on June 13. It was based on the identification of additional damages resulting from the disaster; additional insurance information that found a significant number of uninsured losses; updated damage and trauma information; and the documentation of additional economic/unemployment impact.

Information on how to apply for individual assistance will be released shortly.
