PSD NEWS RELEASE: Attempted contraband run on Big Island thwarted by Hale Nanai Reintegration Center correctional officers and staff

Posted on May 23, 2016 in Latest Department News

HILO – At approximately 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 21, Hale Nani Reintegration Center inmate Sloan Deleon was seen running out of a dorm and up a hillside. The dorm was put on lockdown status while corrections officers immediately gave chase, calling out his name in the woods.  A few minutes later, Deleon was noticed further down the perimeter, running back to the dorm, carrying a silver bag. He was seen climbing in through a window.  Corrections staff searching the woods were called back.  A headcount and shakedown was conducted.  All inmates were accounted for and the silver bag was recovered.  It contained candy, tobacco and what appeared to be marijuana.  The lockdown was lifted at about 1 p.m.  The contraband situation is under investigation.

“I commend our staff for their fast work in identifying the individual who tried to bring in contraband and for locating the contraband quickly and efficiently,” said Public Safety Director Nolan Espinda. “Staff did everything they were trained to do.”

Deleon was transported to the Hawaii Community Correctional Center.  He could face contraband possession-related charges as well as attempted escape for leaving the dorm unauthorized. Deleon is serving time for Theft 2 and Prohibited Acts Related to Drug Paraphernalia.  He is a community custody inmate.  Community custody is the lowest classification status.

Hale Nani, the Hawaii Community Correctional Center’s reintegration program, is a dorm-style building located in Panaewa.  Hale Nani offers offenders reintegration services and a work release program for sentenced inmates who will be released on the island of Hawaii.
