PSD NEWS RELEASE: OCCC redevelopment planning – Environmental impact statement preparation notice comment period extended

Posted on Oct 11, 2016 in Latest Department News

HONOLULU – The Department of Public Safety (PSD) and the Department of Accounting and General Services (DAGS) would like to announce that the public review period for the Environmental Impact Statement Preparation Notice (EISPN) on the relocation and expansion of the Oahu Community Correctional Center has been extended from 30 to 60 days. The Governor notified the Office of Environmental Quality Control (OEQC, https://health.hawaii.gov/oeqc/) at the end of last week that a sixty-day public comment period on the EISPN is in the spirit of the EIS law under HRS Chapter 343 and Chapter 353. The public review period extension was published in the October 8, 2016 edition of the OEQC Notice. All comments should now be postmarked by November 22, 2016. (The original EISPN publication date was September 23, with the comment period ending October 24).

The time extension was made in response to comments received from community stakeholders, elected officials, and the public at the EISPN Scoping Meeting held on September 28, at the Farrington High School Cafeteria.  The extended comment period will provide the community with additional time to submit comments and address questions to be considered in the Draft EIS.  Work on the Draft EIS is expected to begin at the conclusion of the EISPN public review period.
