TAX PRESS RELEASE: Oahu Tax Preparation Company Charged with Tax Violations
Posted on Feb 19, 2019 in Latest Department NewsHONOLULU – On February 13, 2019, FMS Hawaii, Inc., a tax preparation service was charged by felony complaint with violating four counts of Hawaii Revised Statutes Section 231-36.4 for their wilful failure to pay over withholding taxes for tax years 2011 to 2014.
FMS Hawaii, Inc. faces a fine of not more than $500,000 per count if convicted.
On February 15, 2019, Teodora Villafuerte, a corporate officer for FMS Hawaii, Inc. was charged by complaint with violating four counts of Hawaii Revised Statutes Section 231-35 for her wilful failure to file withholding tax returns for tax years 2011 to 2014.
Villafuerte faces imprisonment of not more than one year, or probation and a fine of not more than $25,000 per count if convicted.
Under Governor Ige’s administration, there have been increased enforcement efforts by the Criminal Investigation Section of the Department of Taxation and the Department of the Attorney General.
