PSD NEWS RELEASE: DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY COVID-19 UPDATE

Posted on Aug 10, 2021 in Latest Department News, Newsroom

HONOLULU – COVID-19 testing is continuously being conducted statewide at all facilities. The Kauai Community Correctional Center (KCCC) reports 125 inmate test results, of which, 31 were positive and 94 were negative. There was also one positive KCCC staff test result reported. KCCC has enacted their pandemic protocol to suspend all inmate movement in and out of the facility.

The Maui Community Correctional Center (MCCC) reports four positive staff test results, the Women’s Community Correctional Center (WCCC) reports two positive staff results and the Oahu Community Correctional Center (OCCC) reports two positive staff test results. OCCC also reports 40 inmate test results, of which, seven were positive and 33 were negative. PSD health care staff and the Department of Health have initiated contact tracing and are coordinating voluntary testing for inmates.

“The Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) is conducting contact tracing and investigation, but it is safe to say that the preliminary cause appears to be from the rapid community spread across our state,” said Tommy Johnson, PSD Deputy Director for Corrections. “PSD is doing everything in its power to mitigate community spread into the facilities and will continue to follow the pandemic plan which is based on DOH and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines for correctional facilities”.

The latest testing updates received for other facilities are as follows:

Halawa Correctional Facility – 6 negative staff test results

Hawaii Community Correctional Center (HCCC) – 2 negative inmate test results. 2 inmates recovered. HCCC is clear of all inmate COVID-19 cases.

The Department of Public Safety (PSD) continues to encourage all staff and inmates to voluntarily get tested and receive the COVID vaccination. For PSD’s Pandemic Plan and more information on PSD’s planning and response to COVID-19, inmate testing data, and information detailing the efforts made to safeguard the inmates, staff and public, visit the dedicated COVID-19 webpage at: https://dps.hawaii.gov/blog/2020/03/17/coronavirus-covid-19-information-and-resources/.
