PSD News Release: Department of Public Safety COVID-19 Update

HONOLULU – The Department of Public Safety (PSD) Training and Staff Development (TSD) section reports one corrections officer recruit tested positive for COVID-19. The Department of Health is conducting contact tracing and has cleared TSD to continue the Basic Corrections Recruit Class (BCRC) and Law Enforcement Recruit Class (LERC) training. PSD is coordinating with DOH to offer voluntary testing to all recruits and TSD staff. The one TSD law enforcement recruit and one Administration Division employee, first reported as positive on August 12, have recovered.

COVID-19 testing is continuously being conducted in the state prisons and jails as well as in the contracted Saguaro Correctional Center in Eloy, AZ. The Department of Public Safety (PSD) continues to encourage all staff and inmates to voluntarily get tested and receive the COVID-19 vaccination. The latest testing updates received for the correctional facilities are as follows:

Oahu Community Correctional Center – 462 inmate test results: 34 positive, 426 negative and two (2) inconclusive. 43 inmates have recovered, bringing the total active positive inmate cases down to 95. One (1) positive employee test result was reported as well as two (2) staff recoveries.

Maui Community Correctional Center – Five (5) positive inmate test results. 63 inmates have recovered which brings the total active positive inmate cases down to 17.

Hawaii Community Correctional Center – Five (5) inmate test results: One (1) positive, four (4) negative.

Halawa Correctional Facility – One (1) positive inmate test result. 43 inmates have recovered, dropping the total active inmate cases to 21. The two (2) inmates previously reported as hospitalized are among the recoveries noted. There was also one (1) staff recovery reported.

Women’s Community Correctional Center – 206 negative inmate test results and 13 negative staff test results. (NOTE: One (1) positive extended furlough inmate reported on Friday (8/27) returned to the facility to be medically isolated.)

Saguaro Correctional Center (Eloy, AZ) – 5 inmates have recovered. Saguaro is clear of active inmate COVID-19 cases.
