PSD News Release: Department of Public Safety COVID-19 update

HONOLULU – The Department of Public Safety (PSD) was notified a deputy sheriff, assigned to District Court (Oahu First Circuit), has reported a positive test result. Notifications were made to the Judiciary and the Department of Health. One (1) deputy sheriff, previously reported positive on 9/3/21, has recovered and is cleared to return to duty.

The PSD Administrative Division reports two (2) admin employees have confirmed they tested positive. One previously reported positive admin employee has been medically cleared to return to work. The PSD Training and Staff Development (TSD) section reports one corrections officer recruit tested positive for COVID-19. The Department of Health is conducting contact tracing and has cleared TSD to continue the Basic Corrections Recruit Class (BCRC) and Law Enforcement Recruit Class (LERC) training.

COVID-19 testing is continuously being conducted in the state prisons and jails as well as in the contracted Saguaro Correctional Center in Eloy, AZ. The latest testing updates received for other correctional facilities are as follows:

Kauai Community Correctional Center – Four (4) inmate test results: Two (2) positive, two (2) negative.

Oahu Community Correctional Center – Five (5) inmate test results: Three (3) positive, one (1) negative, one (1) inconclusive. Four (4) staff have recovered and returned to work, dropping the total active positive staff cases to 14. OCCC confirms one (1) staff hospitalization was reported to the facility.

Halawa Correctional Facility – One (1) positive inmate test result. All other active positive inmates have recovered, leaving just the one (1) active inmate case.
